Canon SemiCon West Flying Machine Invitation
This was a direct mail invitation to SemiCon West. We had custom balsa wood airplanes made and custom inserts printed with the quote “Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible” - Lord Kelvin and on the back it said, “At Canon, we don’t predict the future, we invent it”. We also handed these out at the booth and had the booth decorated with other bone-headed quotes from famous people.

STEAG Electronic Systems Risk Ad

STEAG Electronic Systems DeForest Ad

STEAG Electronic Systems Limits Ad
This was an innovative series of ads for all of the different divisions of STEAG and all of the challenges they faced in order to solve the customers biggest problem. We used the stories of risk taking inventors who changed how we look a the world. The biggest hurdle we had to overcome was the German mind-set “We don’t sell dead inventor”. A quote I will always love.

STEAG Electronic Systems Infinity Ad
STEAG Electronic Systems was based in Germany with an office in Austin, Texas. We eventually did all of the work for all of the STEAG division in the USA, Germany and Japan. Their products were used in preparing wafers for etching, cleaning wafers and etching wafers. We provided the full-spectrum of marketing materials for them. We did brochures, ads, tradeshow booths, datasheets, training materials, logo design and website.

3M Lighten Your Load Ad
This is a campaign for 3M Scotchlock 2 Connectors product introduction. We ran these ads in all electrical products publications for six months and moved to single page and fractional pages after that. We did all the package design, all the direct mail, in-store point-of-sale materials as well as all training materials for field sales team. I even used them in my house that I was remodeling at the time. They work great. These three connectors replaced 7 different size connectors.

- 3M Penguin Ad
This was an OK ad for a pretty boring product. But the photoshoot rocked. We actually spent 3 days at SeaWorld in San Antonio, Texas inside the penquin exhibit. It took us a half of a day to set up the power and all of the structure to hold the lights, a day to light and we shot the next morning. I got to know the Ornithologists pretty well. And I got a masters level education on all of the different types of penguins.
But the coolest thing was during the shoot, i was just off camera with a long pole to shoo away any of the Emperor penguin who might waddle up to the model and poke him in the eye. They were fond of doing that. I also accidentally stepped on a penguin, but he was OK. He informed me of his dilima by pecking on my leg.

3M Crime Scene Ad
One of many 3M divisions was a division that took products used in one market and repackaged it and marketed it to another verticle. In this case, it was a vacume with special filters used by crime scene investigators. We staged a crime scene with the help of real CSI folks from Travis county. We tried to stay away from the gore, but our client wanted blood everywhere. We compromised with making it dark and spooky. In the course of working on this project, we got to attend a few tradeshows. And I have to say, these tradeshows included some pretty cool products.

3M Olympic Coin Ad
One of the first clients I ever worked on was 3M Electrical Products Division. (3M had 44 divisions and I worked on 4 in total.) This ad was one of a series of ads announcing a 3M Co-op program for electrical distributors. We ran a sales promotion, ad reimbursement promotion and a incentive promotion that was Olympic themed. It was complicated and tons of rules, but the creative was fun. If you have ever worked on a co-op program, you know how difficult it is to work around all the legal rules. We did this before the internet and so there was a binder, datasheets, ad sheets, clip art, fulfillment center coordination and a team of accountants standing by.

Luminex Biotechnology Introduction Ad

Luminex Biotechnology Perspectives Ad
I love biotech. There, I said it. And I have been working on this client since before they went public. They have a great technology, a great products and great people. These two ads are the first two ads that they ever ran. We basically introduced bead-based multiplexing to the world. It was both an new use for existing technology and a revolutionary way to run up to 100 tests on a single drop of blood. We followed this concept up with tradeshow booth, sales materials and annual reports.

ConectSouth Recruitment Ad - Endowed

ConnectSouth Recruitment Ad - Fun Loving
During the dot-com madness days, we had this client that was tying to hire 20 people every week. They also changed their name twice while we worked with them. They were reselling DSL and they had tons of cash and not a lot of restraint. So in some ways, they were a dream client. We did a great series of recruitment ads plus tons of sales materials. We had to come up with a solution that was very flexible. They went through 6 sales managers in 8 months and each one changed the sales message.

Fujitsu OC 192 Ad
Fujitsu was a great client and a great company to work with. Our client contact really knew how to get the most out of his agency. He taught me about the telecom industry, the technology and the issues facing the customer, the companies and the engineers. We also worked hard to repositiong Fujitsu Network Transmission and Fujitsu Network Switching as one single american companies could trust. We were up against the likes of Lucent, Nortel and other spending 10 times what we did.
